On April 14, is the 63rd anniversary of the Institute of Economics of ANAS. The institute was established on April 14, 1958, by the decision of the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR on the basis of the Economics and Geography Sector established in 1935 under the Azerbaijan branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences and the Economic Sector operating under the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences since 1945
The Institute of Economy has passed very high historically developed and great way and takes special place in the system of National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan and gave great recommendations to the development of economic sciences in Azerbaijan. The first in 1935s, the Institute of Economy was created in the sector of Economy and Geography in the branch of SA of Azerbaijan SSR, in 1945s, created in the basis of Economic sector acted in the Azerbaijan AS and in 1958s, on the base of decision by the Soviet of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR
When the Institute began to act (within 1958-1960s) there were 5 departments – “Political economy and economic thought”, “Industrial economy”, “Agricultural economy”, “Accommodation of socialist production” and “The history of economy”.
In the following years (in 1961-1965s, 1966-1970s, 1971-1985s and 1986-1990s), in general amount the scientific research works were done in the institute directed to the carrying out the state assignments and important economic problems of those periods determined by Former Union, governmental and state bodies of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
One of the main features characterizing the level of research work carried out at the Institute of Economics in the 70s and 80s is that during this period 23 scientific results of the institute's staff were evaluated by the Presidium of the former USSR Academy of Sciences as the most important achievements of Soviet science and included in the Report of the Presidium.
On October 18, 1991s, the Azerbaijan Republic besides gaining the independence also the transition to a market economy there also was a new stage in the sphere of economic development of the country and economic sciences, including according to the demands of new period there were put new duties in front of Institute of Economy. In the independence period the Institute of Economy NAS of Azerbaijan carried out very progressive and successful scientific research works in the formalization and development of independent national economy, also worked very hard in the preparation of professional national personnel’s and economic scientists.
For long years, in the Council of Dissertation of the Institute of Economy defensed more than 900 Ph.D. in Economics and more than 100 D.Sc. of Economy and were published more than 1500 monographs and books.
On October 18, 2018, the 60th anniversary event of the Institute of Economics of ANAS was held in the main building of ANAS. Along with the leadership of ANAS, members of the Government and Milli Majlis, heads and employees of ANAS institutes, university rectors, well-known economists, guests from foreign countries - China, Georgia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Russia and Kyrgyzstan also took part in the meeting.
By the Orders of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated October 16, 2018, 7 employees of the Institute of Economics of ANAS - 5 people were awarded "Honorary Diploma of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan" and 2 people were awarded "Progress" medal for their services in the development of economics. In addition, about 20 more employees of the Institute of Economics of ANAS were awarded the "Honorary Decree" of the Department of Social Sciences of ANAS, taking into account the productive scientific activities.

The main activities of the institute are fundamental research of the problems of socio-economic development of the independent national economy of Azerbaijan, macroeconomic and regional development problems.
The Institute of Economics of ANAS, one of the main centers of fundamental and applied economic research in Azerbaijan, is currently conducting research on "Socio-economic development of Azerbaijan and directions for further improvement of its position in international comparative rankings (2019-2021)." For this purpose, 24 working groups have been established and are being conducted 22 international rankings. 4 more ratings are the institute's own research. These are the Leftness (Rightness) Index of the Economy, socio-economic development in Azerbaijan, realization of economic potential in Azerbaijan and quality of life indices in Azerbaijan. On the basis of these indices, the quality of life in 8 economic regions, 6 republican cities and 55 administrative regions of Azerbaijan was assessed comparatively. In addition, a mathematical apparatus has been developed to determine the multifactor dependence of macroeconomic standards and efficiency indicators in unbalanced open economic systems.
Since 2014, the Institute has been conducting research on the Leftness (Rightness) Index of the Economy - IS (S) I and publishes annual indicators. This index allows measuring the level of state regulation of the economy in different countries around the world. The level of liberal-conducting economy was assessed in 95 countries on the basis of measuring the state's modeling interventions in the economy.
The Institute of Economics of ANAS participates in the development and implementation of various state programs, is included in various working groups established by government agencies at the expert level. Scientists of the Institute are represented in the working groups of the Interdepartmental Center under the Coordinating Headquarters for the centralized solution of issues in the liberated territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan, established by the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated November 24, 2020.
At the last 20 years, more than 150 monographs, 3,000 articles, including about 800 scientific works have been published abroad (50 articles in IMPACT-FACTORY JOURNALS) by the staff of the institute.
At present, 175 people work at the Institute of Economics of ANAS. 3 employees of the institute are Corresponding Members of ANAS, 21 Doctors of Sciences, 43 Ph.D. in Economics, and 54 scientists.
Since the Institute of Economics was established Ph.D. in Economics H.T.Huseynov was a head from 1958 to 1964s, Academician A.A. Mahmudov, was a head in 1964-1989s, the Corresponding Member of ANAS, A.K.Alasgarov was a head in 1991-1998, the Corresponding member of ANAS, Doctor of Economics, Professor Sh.M.Muradov, was a head since January, 1999, till June, 2008, Doctor of Economics, Professor I.H.Aliyev headed from June 2008 to May 2014. And since May 2014, the institute has been headed by Doctor of Economics, Professor Nazim Muzaffarli (Imanov) (economics.com.az).
