On June 23, 2026, held the next permanent scientific seminar of the Institute of Economics of the Ministry of Science and Education. The event, organized in a hybrid format, was attended by employees of the Institute and the State Agency for Renewable Energy Sources under the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan also representatives of economically oriented state agencies, scientists and researchers from the country's leading universities and scientific research institutes.
At the seminar, chaired by the Institute's Director General, Professor Nazim Muzaffarli, Director of the State Agency for Renewable Energy Sources, Javid Abdullayev, spoke about the development prospects of renewable energy sources in Azerbaijan and the priorities of green energy policy.
J.Abdullayev provided detailed information on the directions of activity of the organization he leads, the projects it has implemented, and the work done in the field of development of the renewable energy sector in the country. He noted that Azerbaijan's rich solar and wind energy potential, favorable geographical location, state support, and international partnership opportunities create a solid foundation for the country to become one of the regional leaders in the field of green energy.
The speaker noted that the country's renewable energy potential is estimated at 135 GW on land and 157 GW in the Caspian Sea. He provided extensive information on the technical and economic advantages of solar and wind energy, current challenges, integration of energy production into the grid, sales markets and mechanisms for delivering it to consumers.
At the seminar also highlighted the role of green energy projects in protecting the environment, their contributions to reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change. It was noted that the development of renewable energy sources is of strategic importance in terms of strengthening the country's energy security, diversifying the economy, and realizing sustainable development goals.
During the speech, also provided detailed information on the green energy projects implemented and planned in the liberated territories. It was noted that the Karabakh and East Zangezur regions occupy a special place in Azerbaijan's green energy strategy. The high solar, wind and hydropower potential of these areas creates an opportunity to implement large-scale projects here. The application of the "smart city" and "smart village" concepts during the construction of new settlements, and the priority given to green technologies in energy supply, create conditions for the region to become an important green energy center in the future.
J.Abdullayev also touched upon Azerbaijan's prospects in the field of green energy export. He said that one of the main directions of the country's renewable energy policy is the export of green electricity to foreign markets. For this purpose, a project is being implemented to lay a high-voltage power cable along the bottom of the Black Sea between Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania and Hungary. The implementation of the project will allow the export of green energy produced in Azerbaijan to European markets and will lay the foundation for a new stage in the country's energy export.
At the report also discussed the importance of energy storage systems, especially battery technologies, issues of sustainability and continuity in renewable energy production, attracting local and foreign investments, increasing production efficiency, and opportunities for more effective use of existing potential.
The agency director noted that the state's main goals include significantly increasing the share of renewable sources in electricity production by 2030, transforming Karabakh and East Zangezur into a green energy zone, as well as ensuring the export of green energy to European markets.
After the presentation, numerous questions of the seminar participants were answered, and held a wide exchange of views on the topic. During the discussions, interesting proposals were made regarding the future development prospects of the green energy sector of Azerbaijan, opportunities for international cooperation, and the role of scientific research in this field.
